LWCC-Kids' Chance Tournament Raises $37,000

Louisiana Workers' Compensation Corporation (LWCC) chairman Aubrey Temple presented a check in the amount of $37,000 to Louisiana Bar Foundation (LBF) president Elwood Cahill to support the LBF Kids' Chance Scholarship Program, which provides monetary assistance to children of work-related accident victims.

The presentation took place at an Oct. 15 banquet at the Country Club of Louisiana, following the fourth annual LWCC-Kids' Chance Invitational Golf Tournament, which raises money for the scholarship fund. Including the $37,000 collected from the Oct. 15 tournament, the event in the past four years has raised over $120,000 designated for scholarships to children of Louisiana employees injured or killed on the job.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, a total of 118 fatal work injuries were recorded in Louisiana during 2006, up seven from 2005. Louisiana was one of 28 states to experience a higher number of workplace fatalities over the year.

"LWCC is honored to help provide financial assistance to aid with school tuition, books, fees and general living expenses for these deserving young students," said LWCC president and chief executive officer Kristin Wall.

Kids' Chance scholarships are available to Louisiana residents between ages 16 and 25 who demonstrate financial need and meet other qualifications. Any accredited Louisiana university; community, technical or vocational college; or state-approved proprietary school qualifies.
