Home Team Advantage: Building and Retaining Louisiana's Best

WRITTEN BY

In 2004, a touch of magic echoed through the walls of a humble backyard shed, giving birth to a legend - the very first baseball bat to carry the Marucci name. What ensued was a meteoric rise, one that led to the acquisition of Marucci Bat Company, and the formation of Marucci Sports under the leadership of former major-leaguers Kurt Ainsworth and Joe Lawrence, and former Assistant Press Secretary Reed Dickens. Within a mere nine years, Marucci Sports had disrupted the long-standing reign of Louisville Slugger, shattering its 130-year stronghold, marking just the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

While the origins may have been modest, Marucci Sports was always destined for greatness. Beyond crafting wood bats, they were fulfilling unmet needs, both within their industry and across Louisiana. The meticulously crafted bats, born under their vigilant expertise, swiftly found favor among elite players at the pinnacle of the game. Meanwhile, their rapidly growing business began generating jobs and a positive economic impact in Louisiana that has since spread outward from their Baton Rouge headquarters.

By 2022, Marucci Sports sold for $200 million to Connecticut-based Compass Diversified Holdings. However, with Louisiana native Kurt Ainsworth remaining at the helm as CEO, the shift in ownership came with one significant promise - Baton Rouge would forever remain the hub of operations for Marucci Sports.

"I don't think we could have built Marucci Sports anywhere else outside Baton Rouge or Louisiana," says Kurt Ainsworth. "It's been a huge advantage to be here. I've traveled a lot, and I don't think there's another state out there that celebrates food, music, and the home team like Louisiana does."

Swinging for the Fences

That home team mantra, it's more than just words for Ainsworth and the rest of the Marucci crew. Amid their triumphs, as their bats propelled legends and minted millions, their unwavering dedication to the team never wavered. That “team,” whether youth players, employees, Baton Rouge neighbors, or Louisiana as a whole, is where Marucci Sports takes its stand.

With lifetimes spent in Louisiana, Kurt Ainsworth and the others instrumental to Marucci's success have noticed both the good and the bad. They've seen the state's passion for sports, particularly baseball, and the greatness of the individuals who surround us at every turn. Yet, they've also noticed a pattern - the migration of brilliance in pursuit of greener pastures. Their remedy? To forge a realm of undeniable greatness right at home and keep the team where it belongs.

"It can be done in Louisiana," Ainsworth urges. "Businesses can be built here. You can do things that people tell you you can't do here. The people are different. The passion for all of their work is different here. The people of Louisiana are really special, and you can do anything here."

Putting Louisiana in the Big Leagues

For their part in the Louisiana landscape, Marucci is following that timeless baseball belief: "If you build it, they will come." Through unwavering innovation and pioneering initiatives such as the Baseball Performance Lab, they've expanded their workforce by 137%, a significant contribution to Louisiana's thriving 2 million-plus jobs.

“We’re constantly pushing to find that next edge,” Ainsworth explains. “Our performance lab is incredibly unique. We do things no one else does here, and it’s helping us to recruit talent from all over the country and keep more talent here in Louisiana.”

As for their physical footprint, Marucci’s campus has expanded with new buildings and facilities where they produce an ever-growing inventory of products, a testament to the ceaseless pursuit of excellence.  Meanwhile, their Marucci World Series serves as a tourism juggernaut, drawing thousands of youth athletes, families, and coaches to Greater Baton Rouge every July. Amid Louisiana's renowned culinary experiences, festivals, and music, Marucci is forging a new realm of tourism, and it’s one poised for exponential growth. In essence, Marucci Sports isn't just rewriting Baton Rouge's story; they're redefining it as the nucleus of both commerce and baseball.

"To me, Louisiana Loyal means don't take your ball and go home," says Ainsworth. "We all acknowledge that there are challenges here right now, but we can work together to overcome those challenges and build something really special."

As we look to the future, it's clear that Kurt Ainsworth and Marucci Sports are primed to continue their odd-defying climb to success, but it is equally clear that they will use that success to create a better state for us all. With each step they take, there is no doubt that they'll continue bringing all of Louisiana along with them because they are, if nothing else, team players.
