OUR STORY

A history of elevating Louisiana one business and one worker at a time

Our work stabilized Louisiana workers’ comp insurance and created a competitive market, causing the cost of coverage to decline steadily while enabling more entrepreneurs to start Louisiana businesses. Louisiana now has the lowest workplace injury rate of any state and all Louisiana companies are guaranteed access to workers’ comp insurance. Our commitment to Louisiana has also driven economic growth, created a safer and healthier workforce, and made homeownership a reality for thousands of Louisiana citizens.

Our journey

1991

Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation (LWCC), a private, nonprofit mutual insurance company, is created. 

1992

LWCC opens for business utilizing a small loan from a local bank. With the help of independent agents, policy count reaches more than 30,000 by the end of the first year. 

1993

The original debt was paid in full in under two years.

1995

OMNET® was created, partnering with healthcare providers to create the state’s first and largest managed-care network to best serve injured workers.

1997

LWCC was deemed tax exempt by a federal amendment as part of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.

1999

The Louisiana Legislature passed a package of legislation that established the procedures to remove the full faith and credit of the state, ensuring long-term stability. 

2000

LWCC received its first “excellent” rating from A.M. Best.

2002

LWCC is named one of the top 50 property and casualty insurers in the nation by Ward Group.

2004

LWCC announced the first-ever dividend, totaling $10 million, to policyholders.

2004

LWCC hosted the inaugural Kids’ Chance Invitational Golf Tournament benefiting the Louisiana Bar Foundation’s Kids’ Chance Scholarship Fund. 

2006

LWCC honored original CEO with the creation of the Stephen W. Cavanaugh Scholarship Fund, supporting individuals pursuing degrees in insurance-related fields. 

2008

The Greater Baton Rouge Business Report and Junior Achievement both recognized LWCC as “Company of the Year.”

2011

LWCC became one of seven organizations inducted into the 2011 Palladium Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame for Executing Strategy.

2014

LWCC was recognized for ethics in business with the Douglas Manship, Sr. Torch Award by the Better Business Bureau.

2017

LWCC named one of the Best Places to Work in Baton Rouge by The Greater Baton Rouge Business Report and SHRM.

2018

The Corporate Citizenship Program was formed, encouraging employees to take an active part in improving their own communities.

2019

LWCC launched the Safe School Program to reinforce the importance of safety in schools across the state. 

2020

LWCC launched Louisiana Loyal, a new position focused on being a catalyst to elevate Louisiana’s position in America. 

2020

The LWCC Foundation was established and Louisiana Well Again: COVID-19 Response Package, pledged $1.1 million to help Louisiana respond to and recover from a global pandemic.

2020

LWCC named one of the Best Places to Work in Baton Rouge by The Greater Baton Rouge Business Report and SHRM.

2020

LWCC exceeded the billion dollar mark in funds distributed through the dividend program.

2021

LWCC dedicated the Governor M.J. “Mike” Foster, Jr. Learning Center at LWCC, a resource for employees, agents, policyholders, and the community to cultivate ideas to progress Louisiana forward.
