Louisiana citizens struggle with a range of physical wellness vulnerabilities that threaten their health. Over the last year, COVID-19 further exposed these weaknesses. The LWCC Foundation is working to address the root issues of the vulnerabilities by providing funding for existing programs and initiatives, research, or new innovations that demonstrate the ability of an organization to address the vulnerabilities that threaten the health and safety of our citizens.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health, these vulnerabilities include, but are not limited to:
- obesity
- hypertension/high blood pressure
- diabetes
- cardiac disease
- chronic kidney disease
- congestive heart failure
The LWCC Foundation has opened Phase 3 of Louisiana Well Again: COVID-19 Response Package, $1.1 million grants and gifts package. The application process for Phase 3, a $500,000 grants package, is open through May 14.
“COVID-19 has highlighted long-existing vulnerabilities and conditions in Louisiana citizens that threaten the health and safety of our population,” says Baton Rouge Coroner Dr. William “Beau” Clark, “We need visionary leaders like LWCC who are committed to addressing these root issues and cultivating a healthier and safer culture in our state for decades to come.”
In Phase 1, the LWCC Foundation prioritized immediate response. It entailed the distribution of a $100,000 gift to Feeding Louisiana to provide over 400,000 meals across the state’s five largest food banks. The gift came at a time when the food banks were experiencing a near 40% increase in need due to the impacts of COVID-19.
Shortly after, the LWCC Foundation shifted focus to a short-term grants program aimed at relief for COVID-19 frontline healthcare workers. In June 2020, Phase 2 distributed $500,000 in grant funding to hospitals across the state, providing funds for things like: additional ventilators for critical COVID-19 patients; iPads for patients to communicate with family; a “recharge room” providing respite for frontline workers.
As we begin to see progress in the fight against COVID-19, we must remain focused on creating a safer and healthier Louisiana. A healthy and productive workforce allows our state to thrive.
