Few writers have done more to bring ancient, timeless wisdom and cutting-edge marketing strategies together than Ryan Holiday. And on December 5, 2023, he took the stage at the Foster Learning Center, bringing together these concepts as part of LWCC’s Speaker Series benefiting the Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program.
“As we were planning this event, we set out to find a speaker who could inspire and motivate this important and unique audience,” shared Seth Irby, LWCC’s Chief Strategy Officer. “What stands out to me is how interconnected Ryan’s message is, how relevant it is to every aspect of life – work, home, family – and how easy it is to implement to improve our lives.”
Deeply rooted in Stoicism, Ryan’s presentation emphasized the transformative power of perception and responding mindfully to life’s events. He urged attendees, made up of LWCC employees, agent partners, and community and business leaders, to view obstacles not as roadblocks, but as opportunities for growth. Drawing from his bestselling trilogy The Obstacle is the Way, Ego is the Enemy, and Stillness is the Key, Ryan took the crowd on a thought-provoking journey that focused on reframing challenges as a chance to learn and adapt.
The Obstacle is the Way
The first book of Ryan’s series formed the cornerstone of his talk. Drawing from Stoic principles, he emphasized the importance of embracing obstacles as means to achieve personal and professional development. Rather than viewing challenges as setbacks, Ryan encouraged that we adopt a mindset that perceives adversity as a path to strength and resilience.
“The main task in life is figuring this out… what parts we have control of and what parts we don’t,” stated Ryan. “The event is. Period. But we decide how we respond, what we respond, and what we do regarding what happened.”
Ego is the Enemy
Continuing, Ryan delved into the destructive nature of an unchecked ego. He reminded the audience that ego, if left unrestrained, can blind individuals to their own faults and hinder personal growth. By cultivating humility and self-awareness, we can navigate challenges more effectively and build more meaningful relationships.
Stillness is the Key
Wrapping up, Ryan focused on the importance of finding moments of tranquility and reflection in our fast-paced lives. He underscored the idea that amidst life’s chaos, finding stillness allows us to make better decisions, foster creativity, and maintain a sense of balance. Sharing his daily routine and methods for finding quiet time, Ryan stressed how integrating these types of moments into your life enhances overall wellbeing.
“Stillness is a discipline. It’s a practice,” said Ryan. “But I urge each of you to be present. Be in the place you’re in while you’re in it.”
Throughout his remarks, Ryan channeled the Stoicism of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus to illustrate the importance of perception, humility, and stillness. By tapping into these ancient philosophers’ work, Ryan shared how we can learn from the past and harness that knowledge to change the future.
