LWCC Safest 70 Star: Controlled Maintenance, Inc.

WRITTEN BY

LWCC’s Safest 70 Awards celebrate policyholders who share our commitment to workplace safety. Our Safest 70 Stars go above and beyond in their safety efforts and lead the way in employee health and wellness. For information about the Safest 70 Award program, click here.

Controlled Maintenance, Inc. (CMI) is a turn-key industrial services and solutions partner, specializing in the vulcanized lining of tanks for the petrochemical industry. This specialization led Gonzales-based CMI to being the first in the industry to design and implement a quality control program for rubber linings, which provide chemical resistance and corrosion protection, extending the life of storage tanks.

Since opening in 1972, CMI has established strategic relationships with key manufacturing agents, suppliers, and engineering firms, locally and worldwide.  This has allowed the company to expand their service offerings to include additional and alternative tank linings, tank fabrication and repair, pipe and steel fabrication, masonry services, and more.

CMI considers safety one of its highest priorities. The company works tirelessly to conduct all operations safely and prudently while providing customers with the finest services and equipment available. To do so, CMI employees work together to ensure that each project reflects the organization's commitment to safety, pride in work, and reputation.

“We provide services across the state of Louisiana and have jobs all around the world,” says Jason Hernandez, Corporate Safety Manager. “We’re able to do this by making safety a priority and employing skilled workers who share our commitment to excellence in execution and safety.”

With the help of LWCC’s Safety Services, CMI is able to navigate the hazards associated with their line of work such as confined spaces, heights, chemical exposure, and tool handling and operation. Their collaborative efforts continue to improve the culture of safety by way of their behavioral-based approach, which deploys programming and safety-related efforts throughout the entire company.

“Even with an already robust safety program in place, Controlled Maintenance always welcomes additional safety support and resources,” says CMI’s insurance agent Kase Gonzales, Executive Vice President of Higginbotham. “They remain eager to improve and maintain their longstanding excellent safety record, which has become a large part of their identity as a company.”

All CMI employees in production or field operations are required to maintain up to date safety trainings. Should a customer require additional certifications, CMI provides the necessary training to accommodate the request. Additionally, CMI hosts regular safety meetings, conducts random jobsite inspections, thoroughly investigates all actual and possible incidents, and enforces a drug free workplace by way of their substance abuse programming.

CMI’s dedication to safety and the health and well-being of their employees is one of the many reasons they continue to be named one of LWCC’s Safest 70. CMI has provided a positive company culture and safety-first working environment for thousands of local Louisianans over the years. Additionally, they provide crucial services to the industrial and plant sectors, while placing tremendous value on their employees as their main asset, taking necessary steps to ensure their people get home to their families each and every day.

Lessons learned from this LWCC Safest 70 Star:

  • Maintain up to date safety trainings for all employees and encourage additional certifications
  • Encourage an open dialogue about safety with a "see something, say something" policy
  • Thoroughly review actual and potential accidents, making recommendations and adjustments to reduce future occurrences
