Local Beginning to Lasting Legacy

What began in the 1800s as a community gathering place in Audubon Park has grown into a world-class institution that champions Louisiana’s culture, wildlife, and people. From a single bird enclosure in 1916, Audubon Zoo has transformed into a top-ranked, AZA accredited destination, home to more than 1,100 animals and nearly 300 endangered species. The opening of the Aquarium in 1990 and the Insectarium soon after created a vibrant riverfront hub that celebrates Louisiana’s natural heritage while attracting visitors from around the world.

Today, millions of families have made lasting memories at Audubon’s attractions, and its continued growth ensures Louisiana remains a leader in conservation, culture, and community for generations to come.

Purpose Powered Conservation

Across the globe, animals and their habitats are disappearing at an unprecedented pace, and Audubon Nature Institute exists to change that trajectory. More than a destination, Audubon is a catalyst for conservation, education, and awareness, connecting people to wildlife in ways that inspire action and responsibility. Its work goes beyond caring for animals as it safeguards biodiversity, protects Louisiana’s natural heritage, and fosters a deeper respect for the environment. From breeding and releasing whooping cranes and Louisiana pine snakes to rehabilitating sea turtles and marine mammals, Audubon is ensuring species critical to our state endure. Nearly 200 endangered species are cared for across its facilities, supported by programs that reach more than 250,000 students each year. Through education, hands-on experiences, and exhibits like the nation’s only urban swamp, Audubon nurtures future conservation leaders while strengthening the cultural and ecological fabric of Louisiana.

“We hope that we’re inspiring, not only the current generation, but the next generation of scientists, conservationists, and those that want to be educators,” says Mike Sawaya, Audubon Nature Institute, President and CEO . “Audubon has always been a leader in that nationally, and I think that helps perpetuate people’s interest in the natural world.”

Community Connector

Audubon Nature Institute extends far beyond its Zoo, Aquarium, and Insectarium. It is a network of parks, green spaces, and educational programs that touch nearly every corner of Louisiana. From riverfront revitalization projects that create gathering places for families, to school partnerships that deliver hands-on science learning, Audubon is woven into the fabric of the community. Its reach creates opportunities for people of all ages to experience the wonders of nature, fostering pride, connection, and responsibility for Louisiana’s future.

Proud Partner

Audubon and LWCC share a vision of making Louisiana better. Through its partnership with LWCC, Audubon has gained not just a provider but a true ally, one that brings confidence, professionalism, and innovation to every interaction.

“We’re a Louisiana company, and it’s important for us to care about our folks and to make sure that we show that care and concern,” shares Mike. “And that aligns with what LWCC brings to the table. They are a wonderful resource for us.”

With access to safety audits, training resources, and expert claims support, Audubon is better equipped to protect its employees and focus on its mission. The dividend program and ongoing guidance further allow the Institute to reinvest in its people and operations, ensuring a stronger, safer future for both its team and the communities it serves.
